Growing up in Africa I have been through evacuations, political instability and wars. One particular instance will always stand out. One day, war broke out in Congo (Brazzaville) and soldiers began looting. Three men approached our house, they had heard our family had just received a new Nissan 4x4, naturally, as they were in need of vehicles they came to our doorstep armed with rifles. We had no choice but to let them take what they wanted.
What I (Jordan) will always remember clearly is the sight of a young teenager, most likely 15-16 years old, holding a rifle ready to fire if his wishes weren't met. As the image has stuck with me so vividly since then I have decided to travel across Africa, not to enter areas where there is war but to discover more of the continent I grew up in while also contributing to helping children who have fought in wars, who have been forced to kill and who have had no choice in their future.
